The use of JAUS protocols is part of the 6th Mission requirement (see Official Rules)

The Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS) is the premiere interoperability standard for unmanned systems. This standard originated in the Joint Robotics Program, a U. S. Department of Defense Office in 1998 and since has migrated to an open, commercial standard. JAUS has been adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Aerospace Standards Division. Use of the standard is required in major Department of Defense programs and it is used in a variety of commercial and industrial applications worldwide.

The document link below, describes the required usage of JAUS in the AUVSI student competitions. Included therein are the specific protocols and messaging to be employed by the student teams during the 6th Mission of the IARC to communicate status and position information to the Judge’s monitoring station or “Common Operating Picture” (COP). The COP is a computer workstation running a client program designed specifically to interact with student vehicle entries using the messaging described therein. The interface to the JAUS based COP is a design issue that the student teams must incorporate into their systems and within the rules provided. All teams will be provided with access to the COP so that their systems may be verified prior to the final event. Please visit www.usaric.org for details on use of the COP and other information related to the Interoperability Challenge.

Note that the document linked below is written generically for all of the AUVSI student competitions, of which the IARC is the most challenging. During the 6th Mission of the IARC, vehicles will have to report information as described in the Official Rules, but, being fully autonomous, will not have to receive any commands. The JAUS document will help you implement the JAUS protocols and communicate with the Judges' COP. Other AUVSI competitions may require more or less of their vehicles insofar as JAUS is concerned. Use the Official IARC Rules as your guideline for what kind of JAUS messaging will be required.

Please be advised that the JAUS Validation Tool (JVT) is now available. This tool was designed for use by the IARC teams (as well as other teams involved in the various AUVSI student competitions). You will find the on-line tool at http://www.usaric.org/JVT.

Using the tool is simple if you program your interfaces in accordance with the Interoperability Challenge Interface Control Document (available via www.usaric.org) and follow the instructions on the JVT page.

No download is necessary. Simply point your communications to 24.42.140.203 port 3794 and load http://www.usaric.org/JVT.html in your browser ( a graphical component to complete the Common Operating Picture tool for the judging at the Competition).
